The PNH National Service was established in April 2009 to care for and support patients with PNH throughout England. The service also covers Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as a result of agreements which are in place with the Healthcare Commissioners in these countries. The service is funded by NHS England as a Highly Specialised Service.

The PNH National Service has two main centres in England, one at St James’s University Hospital, Leeds and the other at King’s College Hospital, London. Although both centres work closely together, the centre at King’s College Hospital manages patients in both London and the Home Counties and the centre at St James’s Hospital, Leeds manages patients from the rest of the United Kingdom (including those in Scotland Wales and Northern Ireland).

Referral Information

It is recommended that all those who have PNH cells detected in their blood should be referred to the PNH National Service. They will then be managed as part of a shared care arrangement between the PNH National Service and the patient’s local haematologist. It is preferable for those living with PNH to be reviewed and supported by their local haematology centre with support from the PNH National Service.

If you are a medical professional and you would like to refer someone to the PNH National Service, please either post or email a referral to one of the two designated PNH National Service Centres listed below depending on your geographical location.

Patients referred to the PNH National Service will have the choice of being seen either at the next most appropriate Outreach Clinic or at the appropriate PNH National Service Centre (St James’s Hospital, Leeds or King’s College Hospital, London) depending on where they live and the urgency required.

Outreach Clinics

In order to be able to treat patients in outpatient clinics closer to their homes, St James’s Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has an agreement with eight other NHS trusts. The consultants and nurses from the PNH National Service Centre in Leeds travel to outreach clinics on a 12 weekly basis to review PNH patients.

For more information about these outreach clinics please see PNH National service here
